Edakkal Caves

Located at about 1200 ft above the sea level, the Edakkal Caves are among the oldest human settlements ever discovered. Inside the caves are pictorial drawings and engravings that indicate the presence of ancient human settlements in the region. Despite their name, the Edakkal Caves are not actually caves. Many legends are there behind the formation of Edakkal caves. According to one, these caves are said to be formed with the arrows fired by Lava and Kusha, the sons of Lord Sri Rama.

Chembra Peak

Chembra is the highest peak in Wayanad district and lives up to its billing of being a picturesque location. It has managed to maintain its pristine nature over the years. Situated 2,100 m above sea level, this peak offers a breath-taking view of rare flora and fauna. One can come across many exotic species in these parts. Trekking here is a moderately difficult task. There is a heart-shaped lake on the way to the top of the peak, which is believed to have never dried up, is a major tourist attraction here.

Neelimala Viewpoint

The scenic vicinity of Neelimala is also an excellent venue for trekking with lots of stimulating trails that go through coffee plantations, virgin forests and acres of flowery land. The destination makes a great spot to go with your family and friends as it offers serene and enchanting environment perfect for a family vacation. Visitors need to hire a jeep from Vaduvanchal main road, to go up a hill around 3 KM away. From there a guide will take you on a 2.5 km walk to the viewpoint. The trekking trail is narrow and steep. From the point, tourists can see the milky white streams gushing through the hills, making its way towards the river.

Thusharagiri

Thusharagiri literally means 'snowcapped mountains'. The river here diverges into three waterfalls creating a snowy spray, which gives the name - Thusharagiri. The highest of the three falls is the Thenpara Fall dropping from a height of 75 meters. The first waterfall can be reached easily while the remaining two falls can be reached from the first one by trekking through thick forest. A 5 km upstream trek will take one to the origin of the stream. This place offers challenging trekking and rock-climbing opportunities.

Pakshipathalam

Pakshipathalam is the home of large population of several species of birds. The hill station of Pakshipathalam was once the meditating area for countless rishis or saints of ancient India. There is also a cave called Munikal Cave, where birds take shelter during night and early morning. The cave is also famous for the endangered species of birds known as 'Edible Nest Swift' which makes its nest with the help of its saliva. There is a small eagle shaped projection where the Garuda, the sacred vehicle of Lord Vishnu, was believed to have been landed.
